Prose Night at the Writing Life: 13 July 2024
Things I've learned (some of them recently) about revision, planning, and related items.
My email inbox is relentlessly packed on a daily basis by offers for free clinics, training, etc., when it comes to writing advice or tips or whatever. If I ever got off my rear enough to try and cull some of my old emails, I might discover three times as many of these offers than I knew existed1.
Although online workshops can be useful and informative, I’ve often felt going to an in-person writing class or program, where you can have a dialogue with the instructor/presenter, can be a bit more informative. This proved to be the case a few weeks ago, when I attended a writers’ conference in the Quad Cities2. This one wound up being useful.
Tuning up the Writing Instrument
When I returned to eastern Iowa, I looked forward to reconnecting with the Midwest Writing Center, based in Rock Island, Ill. I had enjoyed participating in several events sponsored by the center, especially writing groups, writing events, and their annual David R. Collins Writers’ Conference.
