Poetry Night at the Writing Life, 27 January 2024
Movement and waiting for movement is our theme this evening.
Hey, everyone. It’s time for some verse tonight.
When I first started doing this on a regular basis, I was a bit worried I wouldn’t have enough material for a monthly spot. I am a relative newcomer when it comes to poetry. As a kid, I was more of a fiction guy than a poet. Poetry was just something I was assigned, but I never really understood the point of writing just a few words in a little line when I could just go ahead and write like I normally talked. It wasn’t until I got older that I realized I could dispense with strict rhyme schemes (although I can play with them every once in a while) and, to paraphrase the description of soccer forward Clint Dempsey by his US Men’s National Team coach Bruce Arena, be willing to just try 💩. And it wasn’t until I found myself in a writing group with several older ladies with an interest in poetry that I decided, “Well, I might as well give it a shot myself.”
